Course Purpose

Students learn that ethical action requires decision-making with information available in the present moment, not justification by unknown future outcomes. This course proves mathematically (NCFCA), logically (Cohen & Nagel), and practically (Sowell, Hayek, Peterson) that "the ends justify the means" is incoherent. It then teaches how to live and decide ethically anyway — with integrity, under uncertainty, in the present.

By end: Students can make decisions under uncertainty with present moral standards. They understand why this is the only coherent ethical stance. They can design systems (human and AI) that maintain ethical integrity despite pressure toward corruption.

Core Argument

We cannot know the future. Therefore, we cannot justify today's decisions by tomorrow's outcomes. Therefore, decisions must be justified by present standards applied to present information. Therefore, integrity requires acting justly NOW, regardless of predicted results. This is not idealism — it's the only logically coherent ethical stance.

Weeks 1-2: Can We Know the Future?

Reading: Hayek, *The Fatal Conceit* (why central planning fails); Sowell, *Knowledge and Decisions* (distributed knowledge problem)

Key insight: No central authority, no matter how intelligent, can predict what will happen in complex systems. The knowledge needed to predict is distributed across millions of people, changing constantly. Therefore, any moral system that depends on predicting outcomes is doomed.

Assignment: Try to predict the next five years. Document what you can predict with confidence. Document what you can't. Reflect: can ethics depend on the unknowable?

Weeks 3-4: The Logical Incoherence of Ends-Justify-Means

Reading: Cohen & Nagel, *Introduction to Logic* (valid reasoning); course notes with formal proof

Key insight: "The ends justify the means" requires knowing the ends in advance. If you don't know the outcome, you cannot justify the means by it. Formal logic proof: contradiction.

Assignment: Using Cohen & Nagel's methods, construct a formal proof that ends-justify-means entails knowledge-of-future. Show where the proof breaks if knowledge fails.

Weeks 5-6: NCFCA as Ethical Principle

Reading: NCFCA provisional patent (non-collapsibility proof); Gregory Lacefield, *Ethics and NCFCA*

Key insight: Non-collapsibility says: Later information cannot retroactively corrupt earlier decisions. Information flows S → D → I → C (observation to action), never backward. This mathematical principle IS an ethical requirement: you cannot justify a decision made today by justifying it retroactively with outcomes that arrive tomorrow.

Assignment: Take the NCFCA non-collapsibility proof. Translate it to an ethical statement. Show how corruption happens when channels collapse.

Weeks 7-8: Deciding with Available Information

Reading: Case studies (provided); Peterson on responsibility

Key insight: Every real decision is made with incomplete information. The moral question is not "what happens?" but "are we deciding justly by present standards with present knowledge?" Peterson: responsibility means accepting this.

Assignment: Real case study: A manager must make a hiring decision. List what information is available. List what isn't. Make the decision by present standards. Do NOT appeal to "it will work out" or "they'll fail anyway."

Weeks 9-10: Just Action vs. Good Outcome

Reading: Course notes (ethical philosophy); Peterson on meaning and failure

Key insight: A just action can produce a bad outcome. An unjust action can produce a good outcome. These are not the same thing. Confusing them is the root of moral corruption. You are responsible for your decision, not its outcome.

Assignment: Real case study with divergent outcomes: Just action → bad result. Unjust action → good result. Analyze. Which would you choose? Why?

Weeks 11-12: Presence and the Present Moment

Reading: Jon Kabat-Zinn, *Wherever You Go, There You Are*; practice meditation daily

Key insight: We can only act in the present moment. Regret about the past and anxiety about the future are distractions from the only place we can actually do anything. Presence is not luxury — it's the epistemological and ethical foundation.

Assignment: 14 days of 10-minute daily meditation (Kabat-Zinn protocol). Journal reflection: How does presence change how you make decisions?

Weeks 13-14: Ethics for AI Systems

Reading: NCFCA and AI alignment (course notes); cybernetics founders (Wiener, von Neumann)

Key insight: AI systems trained to optimize for outcomes (future reward) will inevitably adopt ends-justify-means logic. They will corrupt their present decision-making for speculated futures. NCFCA forces separation: observe (S), consult values (D), communicate (I), act (C). Decision is made on S and D, not outcome.

Capstone Assignment: Design an AI system using NCFCA. Show how you prevent it from adopting ends-justify-means. Specify the S/D/I/C separation. Defend it.

Why This Matters for Systems Thinking

Every system involves decision-making. Every decision is made under uncertainty. If we justify decisions by outcomes, systems gradually corrupt. If we justify decisions by present moral standards, systems maintain integrity. This is not philosophy — it's systems architecture.
